Heidi discovers a photo film that needs to be developed. She gets it developed and finds pictures of her pregnant mother with her grandma. They thought it had to Heidi's grandmother because she was wearing a sweater that her mother had brought to the apartment. Another picture shows Heidi's mom with other people in front of a building. In that picture there was a sign that said, "HILLTOP HOME, LIBERTY, NEW YORK." This part of the story is the rising action.

Heidi will not rest until she figures out why her mother was at Hill House and if she has a grandma. Bernadette has a disease that makes her not able to go outside without something bad happening, so Heidi has to go all the way from Nevada to New York alone. This part of the story would be the climax.

While Heidi is on her way to New York, she meets a lady named Alice. Alice has a very big family, and is on her way to a family reunion. The two of them get to talking, and Heidi starts lying about who she is. When she says that she is related to Shirley Temple, Alice figures out that she is lying, and their friendship ends. This part of the story would be the climax.

Heidi meets Gloria when Heidi throws up and Gloria offers her a Doublemint. Gloria is eighteen years old and is going to college. They became good friends over the next two days they rode on the bus together. This part of the story is the climax.

When Heidi finally arrives in Liberty, she has to figure out how to get a cab ride. Heidi's money had been stolen earlier, so she couldn't buy a ride. Then, Heidi sees a jar of jellybeans with a sign taped to the jar that said, "guess how many - win the beans, plus a free ride!" Heidi guesses the right number (1,527) and a man drives her to Hill House. This part of the story is the climax.
