Bombing of Darwin

  • Darwin Bombed.

    Darwin Bombed.
    188 Japanese planes were launched against Darwin, whose harbour was full of allied ships. On that day there were 27 Allied ships in the harbour and 30 aircraft at the Darwin Civil and RAAF airfields.
    243 were killed and 350 were wounded. Two ships set on fire, one blown up. Six ships sunk, three Catalina aircrafts were destroyed and two US vessels were destroyed, post and telegraph offices were destroyed as well as police stations, Barracks, cable offices and government offices.
  • Broome Bombed.

    Nine Japanese A6M3 Zero fighters attacked the town of Broome, in Western Australia. Broome had become a significant air base and route of escape for refugees and retreating military personnel, following the Japanese invasion of Java. During the attack, at least 88 Allied civilians and military personnel were killed and 25 aircraft were lost. As Broome was almost undefended, Japanese losses were at a minimum.
  • Townsville Bombed.

    Townsville Bombed.
    Japanese naval flying boats brought onfour small air raids on Townsville and Mossman. Townsville, which was an important military base, was raided by Japanese flying boats operating from Rabaul for three nights. On the night of 25/26 July, the town was attacked by three flying boats but did not suffer any damage as the six bombs dropped by these aircraft fell into the sea.

    During the Japanese raid, a force of over 20 Japanese bombers and Zero fighters attacked the Australian town of Darwin, inflicting little damage on the ground. This attack was the 54th Japanese airstrike over Australia. The Royal Australian Air Force intercepted the Japanese force after it had completed its attack and suffered heavy losses from the Japanese fighters.
