Ernst Mach was the most successful surveyor in the study of hypersonic speeds. Ernst was able to find a way in which to calculate velocities in relation to the speed of sound, by using photographic techniques for the measurement of sound waves and wave propagation. Down below you can see the waves created by the inertia of a bullet.

    Mach's Principal.
"The tendency of a body at rest to remain at rest and of a body in motion to continue in motion in the same direction" in other words, one particle has effect on every other particle in the universe by means of inertia. This also went into Einstein's back pocket so to speak, as a conceptual idea for his inspiration to create the theory of relativity. Einstein even cited Mach as such in his publication.

Contributions to the Analysis of the Sensations
Through rigorous testing criteria of verifiability, Ernst proclaimed that "All knowledge is derived from sensation; thus, phenomena under scientific investigation can be understood only in terms of experiences, or sensations, present in the observation of the phenomena." You can find excerpts of Ernst's book here Link text where he advanced his concepts that later would be used for Einstein's Relativity theory.

    Mach's later Contributions.
In Mach's later years after retirement from active practice he published two books, one being Erkenntnis und Irrtum (“Knowledge and Error”) in 1905. And an autobiography in in 1910. He was pushed to retire after unfortunately experiencing a stroke, however this did not finish him off, clearly.

In retrospect I would say without Mach's hard trodden path to physical discovery and his need for tangible evidence in things previously thought metaphysical; He surely pushed a new age of technological discovery. His works laid a foundation for many others to build on and his overall existence stands next to what is the philosophy of science, never ending questions.
