Dred Scott Decision
Dred Scott was a slave who sued for freedom because he was taken out of slave territory and the Missouri Compromise. The ruling by Taney said that the Missouri Compromise conflicted with Article V in the constitution which stated citizens could not be denied of property, and at the time slaves were considered property. -
Lincoln's assasination
Good Friday, April 14th 1865 at 10pm President Abraham Lincoln was attending “Our American Cousin” at Ford’s theatre, with his wife and two guests, but no bodyguard. Lincoln was shot in the back of the head at point blank range by John Wilkes Booth. Lincoln died the next day, after never waking from the coma. -

McCarthy Hearings
At this court case McCarthy was accused of using blackmail to help a former member of senate, David Schine who had been drafted. The court was televised and McCarthy lost popularity. This led to McCarthy's censure. -
Gideon vs, Wainwright
Gideon was arrested for breaking and entering into the Panama City, Florida, and stealing money from the vending machines. In court Gideon was not presented a defense attorney because he could not afford it. After 5 years, Gideon filled a habeas corpus. The ruling by Hugo Black was Gideon's convinction was unconstitutional, because Gideon was denied a defense lawyer at trial. This conflicts with ammendment 6. -
Civil Rights Act 1965
Gave African Americans the right to vote. This prohibited southern states to use literacy tests to determine eligibility to vote. -
Medicare
On July 30, 1965 President Lyndon B. Johnson made Medicare law by signing H.R. 6675 in Independence, Missouri. Former President Truman was issued the very first Medicare card during the ceremony. In 1965, the budget for Medicare was around $10 billion and 19 million individuals signed up for Medicare during its first year. -
