These attacks were commonly described as “yellow rain.” In fact it was highly controversial whether these clouds truly represented biological warfare agents.

    In 1979 a outbreak of anthrax in the city of Sverdiovsk killed nearly 70 people.The Soviet government publicly blamed it to be contaminated meat, but the U.S intelligence suspected the outbreak was linked to secret weapons work at a army lab.

    In April and May 1979, an unusual anthrax epidemic occurred in Sverdlovsk, U.S. agencies attributed it to inhalation of spores accidentally released at a military microbiology facility in the city. Epidemiological data show that most victims worked or lived in a narrow zone extending from the military facility to the southern city limit. Farther south, livestock died of anthrax along the zone's extended axis. The zone paralleled the northerly wind that prevailed shortly before the outbreak.

    In 1984 the Indian guru Bagwan Shree Rajneessh sprinkled salmonella on salad bars throughout their county. The purpose for attack was to sicken the local citizens and prevent them from voting in an upcoming election. It sicken more than 750 cases of food poisoning and 45 of which required hospitalization. The Disease Control and Prevention said the outbreak was natural. It also took many years to discover the truth.

    After the 9/11 reports of five anthrax-laced letters were sent to five media outlets and two U.S. Senators. By the end of the year 22 people were infected with anthrax and five died, and many were left with an unknown anxiety. The FBI conducted that the letters were more to cause fear in people than to kill.
