Stephen (Steve) Gary Wozniak was born on August 11th, 1950 in San Jose, California. -
Wozniak builds his first computer
At age 13, Wozniak created his first computer. From an early age Wozniak showed great interest in electronics, as he was the son of an engineer at Lockheed Martin. He competed in a school science fairs and took home many prizes. -
Attends the University of Colorado
Wozniak attended the University of Colorado at Boulder from 1968-1969. He only went to the University of Colorado for one year before he dropped out. After his freshman year, Wozniak returned home to California to attend community college. -
Attends the University of California
Wozniak attended the University of California at Berkeley in 1971. After his second year at Cal he left school to earn money in order to continue his education. -
Blue Box
At age 19, Wozniak met 14-year-old Steve Jobs. Together with the help of another student from his high school, Wozniak and Jobs built the “Blue Box.” This electronic device enabled them hack into a telephone network to make long distance calls for free. Wozniak and Jobs sold 200 Blue Boxes at $80 each. -
Working at HP
During the early 1970’s after Wozniak officially dropped out of school at the University of California, Wozniak began to work at the Hewlett-Packard Company (HP). Together, while working at HP Wozniak and Jobs designed the first Apple microcomputer. -
Apple I
In 1975, Steve Jobs convinces Wozniak to start a computer company. Wozniak who was already in the process of creating a computer agreed as he could not afford to create his own. In Jobs garage, Wozniak designed the Apple I, a personal computer. -
Apple II
In 1977, Wozniak and Jobs introduce the Apple II. Wozniak created the computer that could be programmed and display colors, while Jobs focused on the marketing aspect of the product. -
Plane Crash
In 1981, Wozniak almost dies in a nearly fatal plane crash that he was piloting. Wozniak’s recovery lasts almost two years and loses memory. -
Retires from Apple
In 1985 Wozniak decides to retire from Apple. Wozniak and Jobs are awarded a National Medal of Technology by the President of the United States, Ronald Reagan. -
CL9
In 1985, after leaving Apple Wozniak starts a new company called CL9. CL9 developed remote control devices that worked with household appliances. Wozniak sold the company after three years in 1988 to pursue a career in teaching at elementary schools. -
Returns to the University of California
In 1986 Wozniak returned to the University of California at Berkeley to complete his degree in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science. -
Publishes an autobiography
Wozniak publishes an autobiography called “iWoz: Computer Geek to Cult Icon: How I Invented the Personal Computer, Co-Founded Apple, and Had Fun Doing It” in 2006. -
Works at Fusion-Io
In 2009, Wozniak becomes the chief scientist at Fusion-Io, an American technology company that creates storage devices. Wozniak worked at Fusion-Io as a full-time employee until the company was old in 2014. -
Wozniak Today
Today, Wozniak is married to Janet Hill. Wozniak has three children from a previous marriage. In his free time Wozniak still enjoys teaching children about computers and working with charities.
