First Oil Well Pensylvania august 28, 1859
George Bissell and Edwin L. Drake made the first successful use of a drilling rig on a well drilled especially to produce oil, at a site on Oil Creek near Titusville, Pennsylvania. -
Transcontinental railroad completed
This was a brutal job that required a lot of funds and took many, many hours to construct. This led to things being able to be shipped easier, and people are able to get places faster. There was a connection now between Europe and America, and people were able to get information faster. -
Rockfeller founded standard oil
in 1870, Rockefeller established the first refinery, which produced standard oil. This led to him buying out his competition and becoming the wealthiest and most powerful man of the time. -
Carnegie Steel Company is formed
in the mid 1870's Carnegie formed his first steel mill. This helped with production and the profits he gained were used to buy out his competition -
Bell Patents Telephone
Bell was very fascinated in how you can transmit things through wires and he wanted to improve on this. Bell worked and finally was able to test his invention, the telephone, which allowed people to talk from a longer distance. -
First telephone on White House
Hayes was fascinated in the new technology, although he rarely recieved any phone calls since they were all processed through the treasury. -
Edison perfects incandescent light bulb
Although not being a genious, he followed his intuition and had others help with problems. Edison, was able to find a way to distribute electricity, lighting up the world. He made the first power plant, alkaline battery, lightbulb. -
Railroads set up standard time zones
The problem was that, when moving people thousands of miles to a different place, peoples times were different. This led to a dozen different arrival and departure times for the same train in a lot of different places. They finally set up a way to fix that problem and stick to one timezone. -
First electric trolley line, Richmond, VA
After trials in 1887, the first trolley cars were out feb 2 1888, they had about 10 and were powered by overhead wires that produced 450Volts to 2 7.5 horsepower motors. -
Sherman Antitrust Act is passed
This removed people from using trusts, and prohibits certain business activites from being done due to them being anti-competitive. -
J.P. Morgan forms U.S. Steel
J.P. morgan invested in stocks of other steel business's. As soon as they went out of business he went to take over by buying them out. This led to him forming the biggest steel business.
