Black Codes
The legislatures in the Southern state had passed laws called Balck Codes. The law was created to help the newly freed African Americans. Some of the things in the law made it illegal for Afican American to rent or own farm.The black codes gave advantage to white employers to take control of the African American workers. -
Civil Rights Act of 1866
The Radical Republicans pushed the Civil Rights Act of 1866 through congress. The law gave the federal government the power to get in state affairs and protect the African Americans. It also granted citizenship to Afican Americans. The Supreme Court ruled that the African Americans were not citizens. -
The Reconstrution Acts
The law requried that the states form a new government. Tennessee was the only state that ratified the amendment, kept its government and rejoined the union. The 10 states were divide into five military districts, until new government is formed.The act guaranteed that the Afican American men the right to vote in election. The Second Reconstrution Act empowere army to register voters in each district and also help organize state constitutional conventions. -
14th Amendment
Congress did worried because they thought that the court might overturn the Civil Rights Act. The 14th Amendent also said,"no state could take a person's life, liberty, or property without due process of law." Southern states ratify the 14th Amendment as another condition of rejoining the Union.
