  • June 28 1919 Treaty of Versailles is signed

    The treaty ends WW1 between Germany and Allied Powers. The three biggest powers were France, Britain and America and the treaty made Germany repay large amounts of money in reparation which is repaying for causing the war, and they also changed Germany's borders and boundaries with countries like Poland and also reduced Germany's armed forces.

  • 1920 Nazi Party Formed

    The Nazi Party were originally called the German Worker's Party and then the National Socialist German Workers Party. They were formed to promote German pride after the war because they had made so many concessions in the Treaty of Versailles, thought the treaty was very unfair and were frustrated they had lost the war. Adolf Hitler joined the Party and was seen as a great leader.
  • 1925 Mein Kampf

    Hitler writes the book Mein Kampf which means "my struggle". The book was a best seller when Hitler rose to power. The book outlines Hitler's future plans for Germany. Hitler is an anti-samite which means he dislikes Jews and anti-communist. He believed they were responsible for Germany's problems. Hitler also believed in a "master race" that did not include artists, intellectuals, physically or mentally handicapped people, homosexuals and Jews.
  • Jan 30 1933 Hitler made Chancellor

    Germany had severe unemployment and economic depression in 1929. The Nazi's criticized the government and at the elections in 1932 won in the "Reichstag" or government. Hitler was made Chancellor which is like the Australian Prime Minister.
  • March 23 1933 Reichstag pass enabling act

    The Reichstag passed an act to allow Hitler the power to basically do whatever he liked. He went against all the rules of the Treaty of Versailles including building up the army and reoccupying land that had been returned to other countries such as Austria and Czechoslovakia.
  • 18 September 1938 Munich Pact signed

    The rest of the world are getting a bit nervous with what is happening in Germany. Hitler promised if he was given Czechoslovakia he wouldn’t push any other borders and not go to war. An agreement was made on Hitler's terms between Germany, France, Britain and Italy. Czechoslovakia and Soviet Union were not included in the agreement.
  • March 31 1939 - Britain reassures Poland.

    Germany took over Czechoslovakia in early 1939. Britain reassures Poland that they will protect them if Hitler tries to invade them and Britain starts to rearm and get ready for an attack from Germany.
  • August 23 1939 Soviet Union and Germany sign a nonaggression pact

    This pact was the Treaty of Non-aggression between Germany and the Union of Soviet Socialist Republic and was a 10 year promise not to attack each other. This meant if Germany attacked Poland, the soviets would not interfere.
  • September 1 1939 Invasion of Poland

    Only one week after signing the pact with the Soviets Germany invaded Poland. The soviets benefitted from this in the following month when Poland was divided between Germany and themselves. This led to Britain and France declaring war on Germany .
  • September 3 1939 - Britain and France declare war

    Hitler refused to stop invading Poland and Britain and France declared war of Germany. There were other factors for war starting were Japan invading China and a new leader in Italy. On the Allies side were Britain, France, Soviet Union (in 1941), the United States (in 1941) and China. Australia and New Zealand were involved as Great Britain colonies. On the other side were Italy, Germany and Japan. Italy switched sides in 1943.
