    Common Sense
    Thomas Paine is the author of this pamphlet. Common Sense inspired people in the Thirteen Colonies to declare and fight for independence from Great Britain. Many people were inspired so it was very successful.

    The purpose is to explain why the colonists wanted independence. It was written by Thomas Jefferson. The first section talks about natural rights. The second section talks about the grievances against the King and England. The third section declares the colonies " Free and independent states". The Declaration of Indepenece had an impact by telling everyone that they were equal and free.

    The fighting shifted to the Middle States. The British drove Washington's troops out of brooklyn. Then Washington had to abandon New York City. Nathan Hale became an American legend. He volunteered for a dangerous spy duty. He became famous for these last words he said "I only regret that I have but one life to lose for my country".The morale affected them by the patriot's spirits being low. Many soldiers deserted. Others just wanted thier terms of service to end to go home.

    The Americans crossed the Delaware river in order to get to Trenton, New Jersey. Hessian defenenders were gaurding the town. Hessians were called merceneries. A hessian is who the England used against the Bristish in the American Revolutainary war. The Americans had a very good victory. The felt good afterwards with their spirits held high.

    The British failed because when the were walking the americans cut them off. Only one out of three troops made it. It lifted the patriot's spirits. France became our allie. It ended the British threat towards New England.

    The British's goal was to cut New England off from the rest of the states. Their plan was to dirve toward Albany, New York from 3 different directions. From Canada, an army of 8,000 move South to capture the forts on Lake Champlain, Lake George, and the upper Hudson River. From the wst British force would drive through Mohawk Valley toward Albany. From the south a large army would go up the Hudson River from New York City.

The British spent winter in Philadelphia.Americans were having a really harsh winter with some not have socks and shoes, not sufficiently fed,clothed, and housed.One soldeir in four got really sick. The continental army used this winter to gather strength for the battles that lay ahead.

    France waited till after Americans won to make sure it was okay to make an alliance. France became the first nation to sign a treaty with America. Baron Friedrich Von Steuben helped train the Continental army. He turned raw recruits into soldiers.

    Gen. Cornwallis moved north to Yorktown, Virginia. He had no reinforcements. He was walking while other troops had ships. He was British while the commander was American so he lost yet another war to the Americans.

    The United States agreed to allow British troops still in America to leave. Also agreed to pay all existing debts owed to Great Britain.Benjamin Franklin and John Adams were sent to negtiate peace. The result was that Flordia went back to Spain.
