Betsy starts her education at a Quaker School called Friends Public school. She learns how to read, write, and sew. She later becomes apprenticed by John Webster, an upholstery. -

Betsy Ross and her first husband start an upholstery business. Recently married, they moved to Philadelphia and started it there. They were both apprenticed in upholstery. -
American Revolution Starts
The American Revolutionary war starts. Betsy's first husband leaves for the war. -
Metting with the Continental Congress
George Washington and the Continental Congress meet with Betsy Ross. George Washington had had her fix uniforms for him so they went to her. They asked her to make America's flag. -
Flag is Adopted as America's Flag
The Continental Congress goes back to Betsy. They adopted this as the first flag of the United States. -
Later Work
After making America's flag, Betsy continued to work in her upholstery business. She repaired uniforms for soldiers. She also made tents and blankets. -
America Wins the War
America wins the revolutionary war. -
Betsy Retires
Betsy Ross retires from her sewing business at age 76. She becomes blind in both eyes and can no longer work. One of her daughters takes over the business. -
Betsy Ross House Opens
The same house Betsy Ross used for her business is opened to the public. You can still visit it today. It is located in Philadelphia. -
Betsy Ross Stamp
A three cent stamp honoring the bicentennial of her birth is issued.
