On January 1, 1752, in phiadelphia pennsylvania, Elizabeth "Betsy" Griscom was born. She was Samuel and Rebecca's eighth child in a family with sixteen siblings. Her family were conservative quakers.

At the age of five Betsy begins attending school. School is where Betsy first learned how to sew. This is an im portant event, because if Betsy didn't know how to sew we wouldn't have an amazing flag to representing our country.

After Betsy was finished with school at age seventeen her father apprenticed her to a local upholsterer. The upholsterer taught her was many new techniques to improve her sewing skills. This event is important because she was able to learn more advanced skills from someone who is more experienced.

Betsy Ross falls in love with a man named John Ross. He was her apprentice at the upholstery shop. She ran away with him and they got married in New Jersey. Quakers believed that you shouldn't marry anyone outside of the religion. So she was cut off from any communication with her family.

George Washington came to Betsy and asked if she would be interested in sewing a flag for the new nation. She accepted the offer and got right to work. This event is important, because this was the start to the nation's flag.

The continental army was laying siege to Boston which had recently been seized by the British. General Washington then orderers the flag that would represent the new nation to be hoisted above his base at Prospect hills.This event is important because, it's the first time the new nation's flag is hoisted.

Betsy begins to teach her two daughters how to sew flags and they sew many flags in Betsy's upholstery shop together. This event is important, because her daughters can now continue her legacy.

Betsy's eyesight begins to grow worse and worse. It's getting harder and harder to sew and she decides it would be best to retire from flag making.

Betsy Ross, the women who sewed the new nation's very first flag, had passed away at age 84.
