Betsy's Ross's real name was Elizabeth Griscom. She was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. She was 8th of 17 children.

When she was young, Betsy entered a sewing contest. She made a flag with a moon, the Liberty Bell and ten starts. The flag took third place at the fair.

In November, 1773, 21 year old Betsy elped with John Ross. They married in New Jersey. John was wounded in an explosion. He died on January, 21, 1776.

Congress said the U.S. flag should be thirteen stripes alternating red and white and the Union be thirteen stars white in a blue field. A committee from the Continental Congress came and asked Betsy about making the flag. And she said yes!

Betsy married her next husband in June, 1777. They had two daughters, one who died in her youth. Her husband was captured by the British and sent to prison in England. He died in March, 1782

Betsy married John Claypole, who told her of her second husband's death. They had five daughters. Harriet died at nine months

Betsy Ross was 84 when she died. There was no real proof that she did make the flag, but there is also no real proof that she didn't.
