Bethany Hamilton was born on February 8, 1990, to Tom and Cheri Hamilton. Bethany has two older brothers, Noah and Timothy. There was a double rainbow over the hospital the day she was born ("Bethany Hamilton"). -
First Sponsor
Bethany Hamilton received her first sponsorship when she was only nine years old. Hamilton's first sponsor was Rip Curl. After the attack, Bethany Hamilton remembers that she kept thinking, "Am I going to lose my sponsorship?," ("Bethany's Cultural"). -
Shark Attack
Bethany Hamilton was attacked by a 14 foot Tiger shark on October 21, 2003. Bethany was floating on her surfboard in the early morning when a shark bit off nearly her entire left arm. Hamilton had been surfing with her best friend Alana Blanchard, Holt Blanchard, and Alana's brother. Holt Blanchard tied his surfboard leash around Bethany's left shoulder and brought her to shore ("Bethany Hamilton Short"). -
Back in the Water
About a month after her shark attack, Bethany Hamilton was back in the water. Hamilton said she was in the ocean trying to learn how to surf again with only one arm, as soon as the doctor cleared her ("Bethany Hamilton Exclusive"). -
Soul Surfer- Autobiography
Bethany Hamilton wrote her first book, Soul Surfer, about her life. The autobiography was published on October 5, 2004. In the book, Hamilton talks about her early surfing life and the accident. She then goes on to talk about how the accident has impacted her life ("Soul Surfer"). -
1st National Title
Bethany won her 1st National Title on June 25, 2005. This award shocked many because Bethany had lost her arm only 2 years before. Bethany was only 15 when she won her 1st National Title ("2005 NSSA"). -
Soul Surfer- The Movie
The movie, Soul Surfer, was released in theaters on April 8, 2011. The movie was based on Hamilton's autobiography, Soul Surfer. The movie depicted right before the attack to about a year later (Wood). -
Bethany Hamilton and Adam Dirk's Wedding
Bethany Hamilton was married to Adam Dirk on August 18, 2013. They were married at an estate on the North Shore of Kauai, Hawaii. The couple had met in early 2012 and became engaged in 2013 ("Bethany Hamilton"). -
Birth of 1st Child
Bethany Hamilton delivered her first child, Tobias, on June 1, 2015. Bethany had been very worried about her surfing career when she found out she was pregnant, but she continued to surf until she was 6 months pregnant. Bethany has also claimed that surfing while pregnant helped her to become a better surfer by slowing down and focusing on her movements ("Surfer Bethany"). -
Birth of 2nd Child
Bethany Hamilton gave birth to her second child on March 27, 2015. Bethany and her husband Adam named their newborn son Wesley Phillip. Bethany now has two sons with Adam Dirks (Marcus). -
