Young Ben, his brother Curtis and his mother move to live with relatives to save money after their Dad abandons the family.

Ben finds out his learning problems are because he cannot read the board without glasses. Once he gets glasses, he can read better and his grades begin to improve.

Ben and his brother get all Fs on their report cards. Mom limits TV watching and forces them to read. Their grades get much better.

Due to his strong reading and studying Ben goes from being the dumbest kid in the class to one of the smartest kids and other kids ask him for help with homework. Hard work pays off for Ben.

In high school Ben get's really good grades and gets invited to Yale to tour the university for college.
