Sethe joins Sweet Home where she meets her future husband Halle. -
Sethe Marries Halle
The marriage is approved by Sweet Home's owner Mrs.Garner. Mrs.Garner gives Sethe a pair of diamond earrings as a gift, as she knows Sethe's marriage isn't technically a real wedding or cermony. -
Beloved is Born
Sethe's first daughter, Beloved, is born -
Sethe Runs Away From Sweet Home
Sethe is forced to run away on her own where she meets a young girl, Denver, that aids in her birth. Sethe's daughter is born,whom she names Denver. Halle, Sethe's husband, is nowhere to be seen. -
Beloved Dies
Beloved dies 28 days after Sethe reaches her mother-inlaw's home in Ohio. Beloved passes away by Sethe cutting her throat while hiding from the school teacher, the new owner of Sweet Home. Sethe kills Beloved to save her from a life in slavery, believing that her death is the right thing to do. This will soon come back to Sethe as Beloved will haunt her and those she loves. -
Sethe Kills Beloved
In this scene Sethe kills Beloved with a knife. When Baby Suggs arrives at the shed, Sethe is clutching onto Beloved's dead body. Baby Suggs convinces Sethe to let go of the dead body and hold onto her newborn, Denver. This scene is important because Sethe breasts feeds Denver, the breast that is covered in Beloved's blood. This later fuels Beloved's anger as it shows Sethe providing life to her newborn when she just took away the life of another. -
Howard Leaves
Howard, Sethe's oldest son, leaves House 124, leaving behind his younger brother, two sisters, Baby Suggs, and Sethe. Howard leaves due to the countless hauntings within the house. These hauntings are from Beloved who will, in the years to come drive away the rest of Sethe's family. -
Buglar Leaves
Buglar leaves a year after his brother. House 124 now holds Sethe, Baby Suggs, and Denver. Buglar runs away because of the hauntings. Sethe never sees or hears from her sons again due to Beloved's presence within the house. -
Baby Suggs Dies
Baby Suggs dies due to the stress that Beloved's presence brings. Baby Suggs death represnts Beloved's anger and fustration at her mother. Beloved is using Baby Sugg's death as revenge, to show that she too can take away someone's life, just as her mother had done to her. -
Paul D comes to House 124
Paul D's presence at first extinguishes Beloved's presence. This allows Sethe to open up to Paul D, whom she now sees as man that can take care of her and love her. -
Denver Sees Beloved
Denver walks by Baby Suggs room to see her mother dressed in a all white dress kneeling on the floor praying. By her mother's side she sees a young girl clining to her mother's dress, which is Beloved. This scene shows Beloved determination to be with her mother. This determination will later increase, as Beloved will do anything in her power to get attention from her mother. -
Human Form of Beloved Appears
After coming back from the carnival, Sethe, Paul D and Denver see a young woman sitting on a stump near their home. This woman is Beloved, who says nothing about her past. All three think this woman who calls herself Beloved is a run away looking for a place to stay. This belief is wrong, as Beloved's reapparence as a human than ghost shows her determination to be closer to her mother. -
Sethe is Choked
Sethe is chocked by Beloved in the woods on Baby Sugg's rock. Sethe feels the pressure of fingers around her neck and it wasn't until Denver saw her mother struggling that Beloved let go. Sethe's choking showcases Beloved's hurt towards her mother. She wants her mother to feel the same pain as she did when her mother killed her. -
Paul D and Beloved's Relationship
Beloved enters Paul D's room and asks him to "Touch [her] on the inside part and call Beloved's name" (Morrison 137). This ultimatley drives Paul D to the breaking point, as he no longer trusts Beloved. Paul D is now scared of Beloved because of her past actions and the action she asks him to do now in this scene. As a result, Paul D openly admits to Sethe that he wants protection. Beloved is chasing away Sethe's loved ones, showing her revenge and proving to Sethe that she can hurt her too. -
Paul D Leaves 124 Home
Paul D leaves due to Beloved's encounters within the house. -
Reflecting Back on Old Memories
Sethe reflefts upon the memories she has when living in 124 house. She remebers the twenety eight days of freedom and happiness before the incident with Beloved. Memories such as talking to friends and dancing. Now with Beloved within the home, Sethe's friends no longer visit and the dancing has subsided. This shows Beloved's control over Sethe as she takes away Sethe's happinss and life. Just like Sethe had done to Beloved. -
Denver Remembering Beloved
Denver reflects upon her childhood memories, but more specifically with Beloved. Denver remembers Beloved's presence within the household, as she always wanted to play or be around her. This shows Beloved's presence came early on, always haunting the family as she wants to be around her family and to be loved. -
Paul D Learns the Truth about Beloved
Paul D finds out, through Stamp, that Sethe killed her daughter 18 years ago. Paul D is shocked in that Sethe committed such a crime but also disappointed. He thought highly of Sethe, but now he has nothing to hope for. Sethe brought joy to his life, but now, even her, brought nothing but grief to his life. -
Sethe and Beloved's Relationship Grows
Sethe and Beloved start to be around each other more, doing activities such as drinking milk together to gardening. These recent activties show not only Sethe's guilt from her past action but also Beloved feeding off of Sethe's guilt and shame. Beloved wants to make Sethe feel the same pain she once went through. -
Sethe's Health Declines
Sethe's health declines rapdily, as Beloved's presence becomes more prominent in Sethe's life. Sethe is losing weight and eating very little. She doesn't go to work and has little modivation to do anything else. This decline in health represents Beloved's revenge on Sethe, as she is slowly feeding off of Sethe's guilt. -
Denver asks for Help
Denver asks Lady Jones for help, as Denver sees the slow decline of her mother's health. Denver realizes Beloved is destroying her mom's health. -
Exorcism
Denver and the rest of the town came to house 124. The town not only brings food to Denver's family but wants to help Sethe in her health and to berid of Beloved. Beloved no longer is apart of Sethe's and Denver's life, as the town performs the exorcism outside house 124. -
Paul D Returns to Sethe
Paul D returns to Sethe, finally able to accept her past. He realizes that even with his past, Sethe still accepted him and now it is his turn to do the same. Beloved tore them apart once, but now it is different. Sethe has moved on with her past and is looking towards the future, the future with the ones she loves.
