Falkland Islands
Darwin doesn't like the islands because they are bare and dried, but he perks up when he finds fossils and rocks. Falkland was filled with brachiopods. -
Rio Negro, Argentina
Darwin explores the Pampas and finds enjoyment in the independence of the guacho life. -
Chiloe Island, Chile
Darwin sees Mount Osomo erupt while on the island of Chiloe and experiences the earthquake in the woods near Valdivia. The aftermath of the earthquake affeced him tremendously. -
Galapagos Islands
Darwin finds many species unique to the islands, but realizes they look mysteriously related to the mainland species. He was really intrigued by the tortoises. -
Sydney, Australia
Darwin wonders why there are completely different mammals in Australia like marsupials. -
Cocos Islands
Darwin studies coral reefs growing around the islands to test his theory of atoll formation. -
Mauritius
He took a walk along the sea coast to the north of the town and saw that most of the land wasn't cultivated and consisted of a field of black lava smoothed over with coarse grass and bushes. -
Cape Town, South Africa
He notices that there are a lot of bullock wagons, but hasn't yet mentioned the Table Mountains which is a sandstone that reaches to the height of 3,500 feet. -
Bahia and Pernambuco, South America
Darwin discovers many amazing creatures here, but is homesick and seasick and not pleased with the unscheduled detour to get extra longitude measures. -
Falmouth, England
He finally reaches home and is delighted to be there because the Beagle carried 74 people in its close quarters.
