Helmeken was a British Columbia physician who played a big role to the start of B.C confederation. He also was one of the three delegates to go to Ottawa from BC when BC entered confederation. Helmeken retired from politics and devoted himself to medicine. -

A group of leaders from British Columbia went to Ottawa to negotiate terms for the building of a road from Ottawa to the west coast. Ottawa negotiator, George Cartier, surprised them with the promise of a railway instead, which would be completed in ten years -
Joseph Trutch
Trutch was the first Lieutenant Governor of British Columbia following Confederation, a position he retained from 1871 until 1876. Trutch was a Dominion agent for B.C and helped to oversee the construction of the CPR in the province. -
Dominion of Canada
Terms for a union with the Dominion of Canada were passed by both the BC Assembly and the Federal Parliament in 1871. -
