CIA gets permission to train rebels
Eisenhower gave the CIA permission to train Cuban exiles for an invasion of Cuba. On April 17, 1961 1,500 Cuban exiles supported by the US military landed on the islands southern coast at Bahia de Cochinos. Nothing went right an air strike that was supposed to take out the Cuban air force did not work and a small advance group that was sent to distract Castro never arrived. The tension grew between Russia and the US because the US trying to overthrow Castro and his communist govt. -
Attempted invasion of Cuba
Ont he night of april 17, 1960 some 1300 to 1500 cuban exiiles supported by the US millitary, attempted to invade cuba and lead a revolution. An airstrike that was planned failed and left the cubans exposed to aircraft fire. Many of the rebels were either killed to sent to prision. -
Amount of weapons into Cuba increases
Khrushchev promised Castro that he would protect Cuba with Soviet arms and this would make the US and Russia grow apart as well. On October 14 a US plan flying over Cuba revealed Soviet missile bases in Cuba and even some missiles ready to launch. On October 22 Kennedy announced that Soviet missiles in Cuba would be removed. Kennedy announces palns to remove missiles
Kennedy informed the public that Russians had missile sites in Cuba. A nuclear attack from Cuba could reach half the US in 17 minutes. Plans to remove the missiles were quickly set in motion. However it also marked that any attack on Cuba meant an all out attack on the Soviet Union. -
Kennedy creates naval blockade of Cuba
Kennedy implements a naval quarantine of Cuba. No resources or arms can make it into Cuba. Meanwhile, a Russian ship is headed toward the quarantine with orders to go through it. -
Soviet ships halt advance
Soviet ships in the Atlantic stop their advance. The first nuclear war in the world was prevented. Millions of lives were saved. This was incredibly important because to the world it seems like an American victory in the cold war, making the Soviets even more eager to best the US. -
Khrushchev orders removal of missiles
Khrushchev leader of the Soviet union announced the removal of missiles from Cuba. For the time being this eliminates the threat of war. America can rest easier but at the same time the threat is still there even though he said he was going to remove them.
