US military forces and between 1,300 and 1,500 Cuban exiles invaded Cuba at the Bay of Pigs. The invasion failed miserably through lack of adequate information and general lack of assurance all around. Kennedy publicly took blame for the failure, but privately blamed the military. America looked stupid to the world for a time. -
Kennedy Announces Intolerance over Missiles in Cuba
In the summer of 1962, the amount of Soviet weapons that entered Cuba dramatically increased. In reply, president Kennedy warned that America wouldn’t tolerate nuclear weapons in Cuba. The US’s view on the Soviet Union was threatening because the Soviet Union was bringing deadly weapons close to the US borders, hinting a brutal war. The Soviet Union was preparing for the worst and getting ready to give it their all. -
Planes Spot Missile Silos in Cuba
In October 14, 1962, American spyplanes flew over Cuba, taking pictures along the way. These pictures revealed that Cuba had control of multiple Soviet missile bases, some were even loaded and ready to launch. These missiles, if launched, would reach American coastal cities within minutes. No country changed their opinions of America based solely on this particular event. -
Kennedy Announces Possible Hostilities
On October 22 of 1962, President Kennedy warned his country about the Soviet missiles sighted in Cuba. He told them his plans to get them removed to avoid an attack on the US. He made a point that any missile attack from Cuba would lead to an attack on the Soviet Union. The United States is getting defensive against the Soviet Union. President Kennedy basically gave the Soviet Union a warning saying that if they attack us, we will declare war and destroy them. -
Kennedy Quarantines Cuba
On October 24th, president Kennedy ordered a naval blockade of Cuba, quarantining the island from the outside world and preventing Soviet ships from reaching it. This tactic was by no means an innovative plan, but was probably one of the better things that could be done in this case. It achieved the desired results. The world mostly approves of this act, and in years to pass followed the embargo that began on this day. -
Soviets Stop Approach of Cuba
There was a frightening possibility of nuclear war between the US and the Soviet Union. Soviet ships were approaching the US blockade. To avoid confrontation at sea, the Soviet ships came to a halt. The tension between the two countries was enormous. -
Khrushchev Removes Missiles from Cuba
On October 28, 1962, Khrushchev announces his plan to remove missiles from Cuba only if America promised to not invade Cuba. But what the public didn’t know was that the US also had missiles in Turkey. So the US also agreed to have their missiles removed. Because it was such a close call, both leaders were hit with a lot of criticism.
