Battle of Dunkirk
This battle was between Britain and Germany. The German leader was Adolf Hitler and the British leader was Winston Churchill. The British Expeditionary Force and other Allied troops were evacuated from Dunkirk to England as German forces closed in on them. The massive operation, involving hundreds of naval and civilian vessels, became known as the “Miracle of Dunkirk” and served as a turning point for the Allied war effort. Both armies lost around 20,000 men. -
Battle of Moscow
This was a Battle between Germany and the Soviet Union. Soviets led by Joseph Stalin and the Germans led by Adolf Hitler. It was the climax of Nazi Germany’s Operation Barbarossa, and it ended the Germans’ intention to capture Moscow, which ultimately doomed the Third Reich. The German advance on Moscow in September 1941 was soon in trouble because of atrocious weather conditions. The German casualties were estimated to be around 300,000 and the Soviets to be around 800,000. -
Battle of Pearl Harbor
The battle started when Japanese bombers bombarded a United States naval base in Hawaii. the Japanese were led by Hirohito and the U.S. led by Franklin D. Roosevelt. Just before 8 a.m. on that Sunday morning, hundreds of Japanese fighter planes descended on the base, where they managed to destroy or damage nearly 20 American naval vessels, including eight battleships, and over 300 airplanes. More than 2,400 Americans died in the attack. This resulted in the U.S. joining WWII. -
Battle of Midway
This battle was between Japan and the United States. Japan was lead by Hirohito and the U.S. was led by Franklin D. Roosevelt. fought almost entirely with aircraft, in which the United States destroyed Japan’s first-line carrier strength and most of its best trained naval pilots. Together with the Battle of Guadalcanal, the Battle of Midway ended the threat of further Japanese invasion in the Pacific. The casualties for the Japanese were approximately 3,000 and for the U.S. they were 317. -
Battle of Stalingrad
This battle was between Germany and the soviet union.The German leader was Adolf Hitler and the soviet leader was Joseph Stalin.Russians consider it to be one of the greatest battles of their Great Patriotic War, and most historians consider it to be the greatest battle of the entire conflict.It stopped the German advance into the Soviet Union and marked the turning of the tide of war in favour of the Allies. German forces suffered 800,000 casualties and the soviet suffered 1,100,000 casualties. -
Battle of Kursk
The battle was fought between the Germans and the Soviet Union. The Germans were lead by Adolf Hitler and the Soviets led by Joseph Stalin. The battle was Germany’s last chance to regain dominance on the Eastern Front during World War II and would be their final blitzkrieg offensive. Ultimately, Germany’s plan to wipe out the Red Army once and for all failed, but not before both sides experienced heavy casualties. The battle resulted in 800,000 Soviet casualties and 200,000 German casualties. -
Battle of Normandy
This was a battle between the allied powers and Germany. The leader of Germany was Adolf Hitler and the leader of the allied powers was Dwight Eisenhower. The landing of U.S., British, and Canadian forces on five separate beachheads in Normandy, France. By the end of August 1944 all of northern France was liberated. In the ensuing Battle of Normandy, 73,000 Allied forces were killed and 153,000 wounded. About 22,000 German soldiers are among the many buried around Normandy. -
Battle of Bulge
It was called “the greatest American battle of the war” by Winston Churchill, the Battle of the Bulge in the Ardennes region of Belgium was Adolf Hitler’s last major offensive in World War II against the Western Front. Hitler’s aim was to split the Allies in their drive toward Germany. The German troops’ failure to divide Britain, France and America with the Ardennes offensive paved the way to victory for the allies. 19,000 Americans killed in action and 100,000 Germans killed or captured. -
Battle of Iwo Jima
This was a battle between the Japanese and Americans. The Japanese were led by Hirohito and the Americans were led by F.D.R. The United States mounted an amphibious invasion of the island of Iwo Jima as part of its Pacific campaign against Japan. A costly victory for the United States, the battle was one of the bloodiest in the history of the U.S. Marine Corps and was cited as proof of the Japanese military’s willingness to fight to the last man. 7,000 U.S. marines were killed. -
