    On May 10, 1940, the so-called “phony war” ended decisively when Nazi Germany invaded the Netherlands, Luxembourg and Belgium in a blitzkrieg attack. The Germans occupied Luxembourg on May 10, the Netherlands on May 14 and Belgium by the end of the month. By May 19, General John Gort, had begun to weigh the possibility of evacuating his entire force by sea in order to save them from certain annihilation by the approaching Nazi troops.

In and around Stalingrad, the Soviets recovered 250,000 German and Romanian corpses. Axis casualties are believed to have been more than 800,000 dead, wounded, missing or captured.

    The battle of Kursk occurred in July of 1943. This battle was an unsuccessful German assault on the Soviet salient around the city of Kursk, in western Russia, during World War II. The salient was a bulge in the Soviet lines that stretched 150 miles from north to south and protruded 100 miles westward into the German lines. In an attempt to recover the offensive on the Eastern Front, the Germans planned a surprise attack on the salient from both north and south

    In midsummer 1943, Hitler's Armed Forces still occupied all the territory it had gained in the blitzkrieg campaigns of 1939–41. In January of 1944 the Allies appointed an invasion commander who was Dwight D. Eisenhower. The invasion was supported by more than 13,000 fighter, bomber, and transport aircraft. Between April 1 and June 5, 1944, the British and American strategic air forces deployed 11,000 aircraft, flew 200,000 sorties, and dropped 195,000 tons of bombs on French rail centres.

    This was one of the bloodiest wars. In this war there were more than 15,000 injuries due to the cold; trench foot, pneumonia and frostbite being some of the injuries. Overall, more than 1 million Allied troops, including around 500,000 Americans, fought in the Battle of the Bulge, with about 19,000 soldiers killed in action, 47,500 wounded and more than 23,000 missing. About 100,000 Germans were killed, wounded or captured.

    This war was a WWII conflict between the United States and the Empire of Japan. A victory for the United States, the battle was one of the bloodiest in the history of the U.S. Marine Corps. The Japanese death toll neared 18,500 soldiers, and around 6,800 U.S. Marines were killed and 19,200 were wounded. There were 27 Medals of Honor that were awarded at the conclusion of the battle.
