  • Battle of Fort SUmter

    General?Leader:Lincoln
    Location:Charleston Harbor
    Cause:Cederate froces stage a 24-hor bombardment againsst the fort.
    Effect:Prompted the Civil War, and caused he states of the Upper South to join the confederacy.

  • Battle of Antietam

    General/Leader: Confederate General Robert E. Lee
    Location:Maryland
    Cause:Maryland was a Border State, Confederate forces believed if the war was pushed into Maryland, the state would join the Confedracy,
    Effect: Encourages Lincoln to sign the Emancipation Proclamation, Neither side had a victory.

  • Battle of Gettysburg

    General/Leader: Confederate General Robert E. Lee.
    Location:Gettysburg, Pennsylvania
    Cause:Hoped that invasion of the Union would weaken Northern suppport for the war effort.
    Effect:It marked the begginning of the end for the Confederate forces in the east.

  • Battle of Vicksburg

    Time: MAy through July 1863
    General/Leader: Union General Ulysses S. Grant
    Location: Vicksburg, Mississippi
    Cause: Whoever controlled the high ground there in the bend of the Mississippi River would control traffic on the whole river.
    Effect:The confederate lost control of the Mississippi River and the ability to maneuver their frces and suppies.

  • Battle of Atlanta

    General/Leader:Union general William Tecumseh
    Time:july throught September 1864
    Location: Atlanta,Georgia
    Cause: Atlanta was a key location for the COnfederate operation.
    Effect:The Confederates realzed thet they would lose the war and the North realized they would win.
