Battles of the Civil War

  • Battle of Lexington & Concord, April 1775

    This battle was between the 13 American colonies and British authorities. The battle was fought over an arms cache that the British was trying to seize. The colonists held their ground of the Lexington town greens, and shortly after heavy fire, the British retreated, and the colonists won.
  • Battle of Bunker Hill, June 1775

    This battle at Bunker Hill was another fight between the 13 American colonists and the British troops. The colonists were defeated by the British, but they inflicted heavy damage to the British army and this battle gave them a strong confidence boost for the fight for independence.
  • Battle of Trenton, December 1776

    George Washington and his army defeated Garrison of Hessian mercenaries in Delaware. A week later, George W. lured British troops south to conduct a night attack on them to later capture Princeton. These small victories led to the control of New Jersey.
  • Battle of Saratoga, September 1777

    The first battle of Saratoga was won by the British General John Burgoyne, but he later returned to Bemis Heights to take on another battle, but was defeated by the Americans and forced to retreat. He surrendered 10 days later. This was a great win for the Americans.
  • Battle of Charlestown, December 1778

    Major General Benjamin Lincoln surrendered to British Lietenant General Sir Henry Clinton of his army of 10,000.
  • Battle of Yorktown, December 1781

    George W. began a seige with 17,000 French and American troops at Yorktown against British General Lord Charles Cornwallis and his 9,000 British troops. The Americans won this battle and it was the most important winning battle of the Revolutionary War.
