Confederate troops in Charleston Harbor fired at the Union troops holding Fort Sumter. The Union surrendered the next day. -
Battle of Bull Run
This was the first major battle of action of the Civil War in Virginia. The Union army marched against the Confederate army, then attacked on Matthew's Hill. By July 22nd, the Union's troops were damaged, but were safe in Washington. -
Battle of Shiloh
Confederate soldiers attacked the Union near Pittsburg Landing, near the Tennessee River. The Union was caught off guard and were losing badly, but they overpowered and soon weakened the Confederate troops. This was the blodiest battle of its time. -
Battle of Richmond
Confederate troops attacked the Union in Kentucky on their way to Big Hill. After 7 days of fighting, Confederates capture 4,000 Union soldiers, leaving the north open. -
Battle of Antietam
The Union attacked Confederate troops near Sharpsburg, Maryland. Lincoln claimed the Confederate retreat was the perfect "victory" before he issued the Emancipation Proclamation. -
Battle of Vicksburg
The Union issued a series of attacks to the Confederate troop from May through June in 1863, until eventually the Union trapped a Confederate army on July 4th. The Confederates then surrendered, and soon Confederacy split in half. -
Battle of Gettysburg
Confederate troops attempt to invade the north, and fail. -
Battle of Chattanooga
Confederates capture and destroy Union's supplies. After a new supply line is established, the Union assults and gains the posionion of Missionary Ridge. -
Battle of Appomattox Station
The Union burns Confederate provisions, debatedly ending the war.
