Battles at Lexington and Concord
These famous battles started the Revolutionary War. Tension had been building between the Americans and the British. British attempted to steal weaponry and supplies, but were forced to retreat do to heavy fire from the Americans. -
Battle of Bunker Hill
The British won, but suffered severe casualties as 226 of their men died and 828 were wounded. A 6 foot high wall of dirt was constructed by the Americans the night before the attack. The Americans only lost due to a severe lack of ammunition, causing them to run out during the battle and forcing them to retreat. -
Invasion of Quebec
Taking the British held city of Quebec in modern day Canada, the Americans could spread their idea to more of North America and perhaps gain allies. This battle was headed by General Montgomery and was a devastating defeat for the Americans that ended up costing the General his life. -
Battle of Monmouth
Tactically, this battle was considered a draw because both the British and the Americans succeeded in what they set out to do, but when it comes to the ratio of men lost to men that took part in the conflict, the British lost more men. It is suspected that many of the casualties of this battle were due to heat stroke rather than actual combat. -
Battle of Cowpens
This was a decisive win for the Americans that turned the tide of the war in the south. The British, led by Lt. Colonel Banastre, suffered severe casualties. -
Battle of Yorktown
George Washington led 17,000 men into battle against 9,000 British soldiers headed by General Lord Charles Cornwallis. This ended up being the most important battle in the war as it was the battle at which the British finally surrendered to the Americans.
