Battle at Lexington and Concord
On April 18, 1775, many British soldiers cam into Concord to try to seize an arms cache. Paul Revere and others warned the people and the colonial militiamen came to try to stop the British. The battle started in Lexington and when the colonists intercepted the troops, the British had to retreat. The colonist won the war because the British had to retreat. Th battle was the first battle, and it showed that the Colonists could stand up for themselves and defend themselves against the British. -
Battle of Fort Ticonderoga
Benedict Arnold and Ethan Allen led the Green Mountain boys to a surprise dawn attack on May 10, 1775. They attacked Fort Ticonderoga at dawn so no one would expect the attack. The Green Mountain boys were successful and captured the fort. There wasn't much fighting and was a small-scale conflict, but this was truly the colonists's (Continental army) first victory. Also, this would give the continental army artillery and a place to use in future battles. -
Battle of Bunker Hill
The battle was fought at Bunker Hill and Breed's Hill, mostly at Breed's Hill. The British won this battle but suffered a lot of casualties. One of the reasons the colonists loss was because they ran out of ammunition. Also, even though the Continental Army lost, the battle gave them a huge confidence boost because of the number of casualties on the British side. In addition, this battle showed the British that the revolution was going to be long and costly. -
Battle of Saratoga
There were two battles of Saratoga that were turning points in the War. The British led by General John Burgoyne defeated the Americans under Benedict Arnold and Horatio Gates in the first battle. Even though they won, the British suffered many casualties. Eighteen days later, the British decided to attack again. This time, the Americans won and the British had to retreat. This victory was very important because it finally convinced the French to help and be an ally with the colonists. -
Battle of Cowpens
American troops under Daniel Morgan defeated the British troops in South Carolina. There was a miscommunication on the British side and it was devastating. The Americans inflicted heavy casualties on the British. This was was a turning point for the revolution's Southern campaign. Also, in this battle, the Americans had no advantage, such as surprise or geography to help them. Since they won even without these advantages, it gave them a confidence boost. -
Battle of Yorktown
The Americans and French troops led by George Washington and French General Comte de Rochambeau had been attacking Yorktown for awhile. On October 14th, their final attack began. They captured two British defense. This battle was one of the last battle and led to the surrender by the British. After this American victory, the British began seeking peace negotiations with the Americans.
