Washington positioned his army of 11,000 men on the eastern side of Brandywine Creek near a crossing called Chadd's Ford thinkiong that the Brtitish would all cross over there but they didnt.Howe split his army.5,000 troops to distract the Americans at Chadd's Ford. Meanwhile, 7,500 troops circled north to attack the American forces from the rear.

It was the first great victory in the war for the United States, and it convinced the French to join the conflict before the British made peace with their rebellious colonists.
