Signifigance of the Battle
The Battle of Liege is the first land battle of World War 1 between Belgium and Germany. -
Day 1
German army consisting of 200,000 men under von Emmich made all possible speed. They arrived before the gates of the city and demanded it surrender. -
Belgian Forces
Belgian army were to hold positions as long as possible. -
Strengths of Belgium and Germany
Belgium- 36 G troops and 252 guns.
Germany- 59400 troops and 100 guns. -
2nd Day Quota
The 2nd day quota caught up to von Emmich and the combinded forces succeeded in flanking the city and threaten to cut off the retreat of the supporting Belgian army. -
Difference in Army size
Defenders greatly outnumbered but inflicted heavy losses upon attackers. It continued the rest of the day. Belgium inflicted heavy losses on Germany even though the ratio of men was 5 to 1. -
Germany Occupies the Town
Germany occupied the town, from which the futher attack on the forts was directed. Von Emmich's forces would proceed with greater deliberation to reduce the rest of the Liege forts. -
Final Attack
The final attack was opened in earnest on the 10th, one after one the forts yielded to the devastating German fire, the garrisons withdrawing to the forts remaining intact. -
German Mobilization
Complete German mobilization and concentration were not completed before August 12th. -
Fort Boncelles
Fort Boncelles was silenced. -
German Advances
Full German advances were not underway until 14th or 15th. -
Fort Loncin
The last and strogest of the forts, Fort Loncin, was capitulated. -
