Constructing the Bridges
At dawn Union engineers start assembling the pontoon bridges. Barksdale opens fire and troops are moved to secure on side of the river. Allows engineers to finish. -
The Battle Begins
The battle at Fredericksburg begins between Barksdale and his troops and the Union soldiers trying to cross the river. -
Crossing the Rappahanock
On Dec. 12th Franklins Grand Left Division and Sumner's Grand Right Division move across the river -
Sumner's Attack
Sumner led the attack on Marye's Heights. He sent multiple brigades against the Confederates, who were stacked three deep behind a stone wall. All of his lines got shot down. -
Franklins Attack
Franklin led the attack on Prospect Hill. He was delayed by Pelham's lone gun and once he actually broke through the Confederate lines, his troops were unsupported and were driven back. -

Burnsides Retreat
After both attacks failed. Under the cover of rain and darkness Burnside retreated back over the Rappahanock.
