First Fight
Early on June 1, Sheridan's troops threw back an attack by Confederate infantry. Confederate reinforcements arrived from Richmond and Totopotomy Creek. -

Aftermath
Grant's army suffered over 52,000 casualties, Lee's army suffered 33,000. This was the only battle Grant ever had any regrets and admitted that he made a mistake. However, Grant suffered less casualties than Lee's army by the end of the war.
