Ft. Sumter
It was the first battle of the Civil War. The confederacy (General Beauregard) wanted the fort evacuated but the union (Major Anderson) refused. Because of this,the confederates opened fire on the fort and so the small union garrison evacuated the next day. -

After the capture of Fort Sumter, the Virginia convention voted to secede from the union. -
Battle of Bull Run
It was the first major battle of the civil war. Union and Confederate armies fought near Manasass Junction, Virginia. The union marched from Washington DC to charge the confederates. After a long day of fighting the south finally broke through the north's right flank and sent them into a retreat. Casualties: S-387 N-460 -
Battle of Shiloh
the confederate troops came out of the woods and attacked the union camps. The union was able to create a battle line that held against the massed artillery. The fighting continued into dark but the union kept holding until they got reinforcements and over powered the confederates. The 2 day battle was the bloodiest battle in american history up to that point. Casualties: S-10,694 N-13,047 -
Battle of Richmond
The confederates (General Smith) launched the Kentucky campaign. They successfully pushed the union (General Nelson) out of Kentucky. Casualties: S-78 N-206 -
Battle of Antietam
Only one of two victories fought in North. General Lee invaded Maryland hoping they would join the confederacy. He became pinned down at Antietam creek and is forced back to Virginia by the union. It was a 12 hour bloodbath. Casualties: S-13,724 N-12,410 (bloodiest day of the war) -
Emancipation Proclamation
Lincoln issued an ultimatum. He declared all slaves held in rebel territory to be freed on new years unless the south rejoins the union . The south does not agree. on January 1 1863 3 mil slaves in confederate states are freed. -
Battle at Gettysburg
Considered the turning point in the war. The battle took place in little town where the union had advantage on top of a hill. When the confederates attempted to launch an attack they did not succeed. Lee was forced to retreat to virginia. Casualties: S-3,903 N-3,155 -

Union took control of Confederate capital (Richmond). Robert E Lee surrenders to Ulysses S Grant and the confederate soldiers are allowed to go home with their horses. -
Assassination of Abraham Lincoln
Abraham Lincoln was shot and killed by John Wilkes Booth while at the Theater with his wife in the Peterson House in Washington DC.
