The North's goal was to capture the city of Chattanooga and keep communications to the North. The South's goal was to stop them and cut off their supply. -

It is the second deadliest battle in the civil war behind Gettysberg. It was the biggest war in Georgia. There were about 34,000 casualties in total. The union commanded by General William S. Rosecrans with about 60k troops. The confederates by General Braxton Bragg. -

It was still a war over the creek with many attempts from the south to cross and take over roads and bridges -
The 20th
The South made a split flank against the north forcing them to retreat to Chattanooga. The union lost over 16k men and the south lost 18k. It was more of a loss-loss situation. The South lost Chattanooga but the North weren't able to keep the creek
