  • The Invention

    The famous sport we all know and love was not all that it is today back in 1891 when the sport was first invented. This now very popular game is very different than when first invented by Dr. James Naismith in December 1891 in Springfield, Massachusetts.

  • Initiation

    Basketball was created by 1891. The location where all of this started was in a YMCA Training School in Springfield, Massachusetts where Dr.James Naismith accepted the job of an instructor.The main idea of the sport was it to be indoors and a small space

  • First Game

    During this year, the first known professional basketball game was played in Trenton, New Jersey. The 1896 Chicago vs. Iowa men's basketball game was the first five-on-five college basketball game played in United States history. Although the sport had been first played in 1892, seven to nine players had been used on a side.

  • All Black Olympian League

    In 1907, an all-black Olympian Athletic League was formed in New York City consisting of the Smart Set Athletic Club, St. Christopher Club, Marathon Athletic Club, Alpha Physical Culture Club, and the Jersey City Colored YMCA. The first inter-city basketball game between two black teams was played in 1907 when the Smart Set Athletic Club of Brooklyn traveled to Washington, DC to play the Crescent Athletic Club.
