Bartholomew Diaz born to a noble family of portugese seamen and explorers including Joao Diaz, who sailed around cape Bojador in 1434. No one knows exactly when he was born, but the year was 1457.

Bartholomew Diaz joins the Diogo D'azambuja, yet another Portugese exlorer, to sail around the gold coast of Africa.

He leads his first expidition

Oct 10, 1486

King Jhon II of Portugal appoints Bartholomew Diaz as leader of an expidition around the cape of Africa. He was supposed to make contact with a christian ruler, Prester Jhon.

Setting sail

Bartholomew Diaz sets sail from the river Tagus below Lisbon on his voyage around Africa. His party consisted of two armed caravels, one supply ship and one square rigger. His brother accompanied him on his journey.
