Ballet makes a come back
Two years after the tragic death of Serge Diaghilev, Wasily de Basil and Rene Blum started a new dance company named, Ballet Russe de Monte-Carlo. Many of Diaghilev's dancers joined the company, also George Balanchine (Diaghilev's Choreographer) became known as a dance master -
Baby Ballerinas
The Baby Ballerinas were 3 young ladies: Tatiana Riabouchinska, Irina Baronova. and Tamara Toumanova. They were the leading dancers of the Ballet Russe de Monte-Carlo. Arnold Haskell, ballet critic gave the girls that named based upon their age. -
Replacing Balanchine
After Ballet Russe de Monte-Carlo's first season, Basil and Blum secretly firing George Balanchine without his knowledge, Balanchine was replaced with Leonide Massine. -
American Tour/ Bankrupt
After having great feedback from the Ballet Russe de Monte-Carlo season, they headed to America to tour. Along with this Basil and Blum company almost declared bankruptcy when Sol Hurok, an American Impresario saved them and took over management. -
Basil vs. Blum and Massine
Because Basil and Blum have different artistical ideas, Blum gave up his share of partnership. Leonide Massine departs from Basil after his contract was up, starting a company with Blum. Massine and Basil fought over the company's rights and choreography rights. Leonide lost all his choreography -
Two Ballet Companies
Even though Basil won Massine's choreography, he lost the rights to the name Monte-Carlo. He renamed it Ballet Russe de Colonel W. de Basil, the renamed it Covent Garden Russian Ballet, then finally named it The Original Ballet Russe. Leonide was left to create 3 new enormous ballets for the Ballet Russe de Monte-Carlo within months of the performing. -
World War 2 was declared
When war on Russia was declared it left the ballet companies without work , and both companies fled to America on the same ship -
Back In London
After both companies were back in London, the conflict between the two companies left Sol Hurok to decide, and he chose the Ballet Russe de Monte-Carlo -
Sol Hurok vs. Wasily de Basil
Hurok publically announced that ' Basil was one of the most difficult people to work with' Basil's company had found themselves outta work ,so he took his company on a Latin American Tour. -
Broadway
Even though much wasn't heard from George Balanchine he was on Broadway transforming ballets into Broadway shows and movies -
End of Basil's Company
Basil's dancers had grown exhausted from dancing, but Basil wanted another tour, so he started replacing dancers that didn't get him what he wanted. So this was the last performance of The Original Ballet Russe
