Nebuchadnezzar II becomes king in 605 B.C - 562 B.C. He is the the most successful king of Babylon's history. During his reign he did many things: he captures Jersulum, builds the Hanging Gardens of Babylon, created the Ishtar gate in Babylon, etc. Also while he was ruling Babylon, the city-state became the most powerful city-state in the region. -

The first New Years day was celebreated in 1945 B.C in Babylon. It was held in late March, on the day with an equal amount of sunlight and darkness. The Babylonians marked the day with a huge religious festival called Akitu, it went on for eleven days and on each day different rituals were held. It also celebrated the mythical triumpth of the Babylonian sky god Martu over the evil sea goddess Tiamat. Also during this time a new king was crowned or the present ruler's mandate was restored. -

What the Babylonians called divination is one of the babylonians unique features. They believed that the gods talked to them through naturaul phenominon, and world events. They would learn how to read the signs through long observation and study. some signs could be on how smoke rises from a fire, or an eclipse, or even unusual dreams. -

The remenants of Babylon is located in present day Iraq. Even though Babylon was founded in 2400 B.C. and Iraq became a countrry in 1932 A.D, there are similarities between the two. One similarity between the two is that both Babylon and Iraq have been involved in war. Babylon went to war with Assyria and Iraq went to war with four different countries. There are also differences as well. One difference is that Babylon was ruled by kings and Iraq is governed by its government. -

The first first five days include purification, and on the fith day the kingwas taken, by the High Priest, to Marduk in the Temple of Esagila. The King had his sign removed and he was then accused of crimes against the city of Babylon. The King was hit and then was forced to kneel and plead his innocence. The King then had his sign restored. -
