    On February 6, 1895, George Herman Ruth Jr. was born in Baltimore, Maryland to proud parents, Katherine and George Herman Ruth Sr. His parents were German-American and were both born in Maryland just like him. Babe Ruth had seven younger siblings, but sadly only one survived the early years, Mamie Ruth. As strange as it may sound, not much is known about Ruth's childhood.

    George, in his early years, was a troublemaker. It is said that it was just too much for his mother one day so she sent him off to St. Mary's Boys School to straighten him out. This claim is one of the most popular superstitions. Not too long after he was sent away, George's mom died at 39 of lung disease.

    During his time at the boy's school, George was introduced to baseball. Finally, when he was 18 Babe Ruth was allowed to play off the school's land. A year later he signs with the Baltimore Orioles as a pitcher and played his first game on July 11, 1914. Here he was given the nickname "Babe." He was quickly traded to the Boston Red Sox.

    Over his lifetime Babe Ruth earned several awards for his phenomenal game. Ruth earned the League Award in 1923 and the Slocum Award in 1931. He even got inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1936. Sadly, he didn't live long enough to receive the Presidential Medal of Freedom that was granted to him in 2018.

    On August 16, 1948, Babe Ruth passed away. He was wrongly diagnosed and died of larynx cancer in New York City. For two days, his body was laid at the main entrance of the Yankee Stadium. Tens of thousands of people came to pay their respects. In the end, Babe Ruth was laid to rest in Gate of Heaven Cemetery in Hawthorne, New York.
