At approximately the same time the industrial revolution was happening, Britain was undergoing an agricultural revolution, which also helped to improve living standards. There were overcrowded prisoners in Britain so they had to find a new land for them. -
Captain Arthur Phillip arrived at Sydney Cove
Captain Arthur Phillip arrived at Sydney Cove. He had instructions to establish th first British colony in Australia. At this time it was known as New Holland. New South Wales was half of the continent. -
Tasmania separates from NSW
Van Diemens Land (now known as Tasmania), separated from New South Wales to become the second colony of Australia. -

Diving up the land
The border of New South Wales have been moved west, with Western Australia covering the remaining third of the mainland continent. -
Britain claimed whole of Australia
Britain claimed the whole of Australia after establishing the colony of Western Australia. -
Melbourne
The settlement of Melbourne, the centre of the new colony, had been founded by John Batman after a rare "treaty" with local Wurundjeri Elders. -
