The Responsibility of Intellectuals Chomsky, Avram N. “The Responsibility of Intellectuals.” The Responsibility of Intellectuals, chomsky.info/19670223/.
On February 23rd, 1967, Chomsky essay on The Responsibility of Intellectuals was published to The New York Review of Books. In his piece, Chomsky thoroughly addresses his view on society and the people of the world. He goes on through his piece commenting on the wars countries have gone through, and whether the people of these countries should be held as guilty as the governments themselves. Through it all he pushes the idea that an intellectual's job is to speak the truth and to expose lies. -
The Turkish Affair
In 2002, Chomsky visited Turkey to attend the trial of a publisher who had been accused of treason for simply printing one of Chomsky's books. Due to Chomsky's very vocal anarchist and anti-war views, the Turkish government viewed it as the beginnings of a revolt type movement in simply reading his books. Due to this, Chomsky insisted on being a co-defendant, and thanks to this and the international media attention the Turkish government dropped the charges. -
