Failed Attemts
Many private businesses sacrificed lives and materials to try to build a flying machine. They all failed -
Period: to
Pre-Controlled flight
The start of a new age of aviation. Everyone was racing to get in the air first -
First glider flight
George Cayley (Father of aerodynamics) flies the first manned glider that can fly long distances and hold more than one passenger. George cayley invented the idea of foiling technology. -
First Hot Air balloon flight
Hot air balloons were manufactured as a wealthy french activity. Pilatre De Rozier was the first hot airballoon engineer and pilot. He called his balloons Aerostat Reveillons. It had a flight time of 15 minutes before it crashed down into the ground. -
Period: to
Early Aviation
The Wright dominated era. The wright brothers where the only manufacturers at the time who made a decent aircrat. -
First controlled flight
The Wright brothers (Wilbur and Orville) dominate the aviation industry by creating the Wright Flyer. It is the first controlled aircraft and it was first flown in Kity Hawk, NC. It was made of spruce, canvas, bicycle parts and pure enginuity. -
Start of Military Aviation
The US military buys the Wright military flyer as the first military aircraft. It was the same design as the original Wright Flyer but made of steel instead of spruce and was built twice the size and came with gun slots. -
Period: to
World War I
A huge aggrindizement in the aviation industry. Now all countries have the power of the air and they are going to use it. This era was all about biplanes! Aviation is only used in military. Commercial and recreational flight hasn't started yet. -
US Aircraft
The US was manufacturing war planes such as:
-Aeromarine 39-40 (First amphibious aircraft),
-Curtiss H-16, and JN-4 (Jenny)
America was leading the world in technology and population when it came to the aviation industry. -
UK aircraft
The United Kingdom only used only one brand of aircraft which was the british made Airco. In warfare they used class DH (De Havailland) models 2-9. -
Soviet Aircraft
The Russians didn't manufacture their own aircraft back then. Instead they borrowed German aircraft such as Albatros. -
German aircraft
The Germans used two different brands of aircraft:
-AEG classes C-G
-Albatros class C
The Germans weren't on top when it came to aircraft but they were dangerously growing into a superpower. -
Start of commercial and Recreational aviation
Commercial aviation was dominated by the Douglas DC3. Recreational aviation was using planes such as early pipers and mooneys. -
Period: to
World War II
Fixed wing, swing wing technology was now making a debut in the aviation industry. -
US Aircraft
The US was manufacturing planes such as all beechcraft, bell, vaughts and curtiss models before 1945. The US was manufacturing jets now made by Boeing which is a new, up and coming aviation superpower. -
Nazi Aircraft
When it came to Nazi Germany, they manufactured planes such as,
-Arnado E class
-Dornier (All classes before 1945)
They were very technologically advanced when it came to military aircraft -
British Aircraft
The British were manufacturing planes such as all avro classes and Bristols before 1945. -
Soviet Aircraft
The soviets are now growing into a superpower and are inevidably competing mostly with the US. They manufactured great planes such as Polikarpovs, Der Schwarze Tods and Yaks. -
The Sound Barrier
Chuck Yaeger was the first man to fly faster than the speed of sound in the Bell x1 (The most advanced jet of thier time) at Edwards Air Force base outside of LA, CA. Yaeger named his x1 after his wife (Glamorous Glennis). This historic event gave birth to the space race. -
Period: to
The Space Race
This was a relentless race between the US and russia to get in space and to break records first. -
A huge boost for the US
The boeing b52 bomber revolutionized the way that the world looked at flight. The US proved that something so large could fly successfully. This was a huge discovery, opening the gateway to modern flights. -
Sputnik
The russians are the first to launch a man made object into space. They used an R7 rocket launched from Star City. Sputnik was about the size of a basketball. -
First Space Flight
Yuri Gagarin became the first man in space. He flew in a russian Vostok rocket. -
First US space flight
Al Sheperd was the first American in space. He flew in a Mercury redstone rocket shortly after the Russians. -
Topping Record
The SR 71 (Blackbird) was a courageous attempt by Lockeed Martin to top the aircraft altitude record (at 60,000 ft) and the speed record (mach 3+). The SR 71 blackbird topped both records and that aircraft speed record still hasn't been boken. Also, the Blackbird was the first plane to be invisible by radar. It's obscure shape reflected signals off of it and the black titanium absorbed signals. Due to the Blackbird's extreme danger, it was retired in 1999. -
Start of Swing Wing Technology
The US discovered from past delta wings that they are near to impossible to land. To solve this problem, they pioneered the f111 aardvark. upon takeoff and landing, the supersonic delta wings open forward to allow it to takeoff and land easier. -
Lunar Landings
The US beat Russia to the moon using the Apollo program. This program included a launch vehicle (Saturn V) a Lunar Excursion Module (LEM) and a command module. There were six successful lunar landings and a total of 12 men who have walked on our moon. -
The Concord
The concord was a brave attempt to transport a commercial airliner at mach 2. These giant delta winged aircrafts were pros when it came to flyng fast, but when it came to landing and taking off, the delta wing design couldn't handle the accuracy count. They were retired in 2003 because of this. Now, most all deltas are retired because of their lack in low speed accuracy. They were replaced by swing wings. -
Space Shuttle
Space shuttle was America's most recent spaceflight. This recycleable spacecraft built the International Space Station (ISS) and revolutionized our scientific knowledge of the cosmos. -
Period: to
Modern day Aviation
Now, avaitioin has made a large shift from mostly military use to commercial and recreational use. -
Boeing's superpower
Boeing dominiates the modern aviation industry as far as population goes. The boeing line up begins with the small 717 and ends with the huge 747. Boeing's latest advancement is the 767. -
Airbus' Adoration
Airbus is an up in coming aviation dominator. Their innovation has won them a spot in almost every airline fleet in the world. They are the most technologically advanced aircraft used commerrcially to date. They have created the largest commercial aircraft ever built which is the A380. -
Antanov 225
The russian Antanov 225 is the largest aircraft ever built by man in the history of time. It is twice the size of a normal boeing 747 and twice as heavy than the A380 with a full payload. It is used for intercontinental cargo trasportation such as cars, other planes, ships, NASA rockets and building materials. -
Modern Recreational Aviation
Private aviation is dominated by Cessna, Beechcraft Mooney, etc. But the nicest and most technologically advanced by far is Diamond. -
Period: to
Future Aviation
We will expand our knowledge, technology and our planet's boundaries through the future plans of flight. -
Future in Space Flight
NASA's newly forming Constilation program is building a new space program for the US. It is much lke Apollo but on a larger scale. Their first launch is set for the ISS in 2015. By 2040 they expect to make it to Mars and Vesta. -
Commercial future
Boeing is coming out with their 787 and airbus is trying to top them with a brand new futuristic concept plane design set for 2030. -
