In 1909 President Roosevelt sees a great use for planes. The government then purchases the Wright's plane and this is important because it helped the Army get ideas for other planes and how to build them. -

May 15, 1918 an Air Mail act was issued by the United States Post Office Department. This act added more routes for planes and Air Mail stamps were issued. -

November 11, 1918 WW1 had just ended and plane production was at an all time high but after the War, plane production came to a halt and little to no planes were being made. This greatly affected the Aviation Industry but it recovered a few years later. -
Barnstormers went to different towns to preform with their planes and gave people rides.
This was really significant in the knowledge that planes do exist and rural area got to see them for the first time and they inspired many people to take Aviation. -

1920 Ralph Pulitzer starts air races for military airplanes, he wanted to publicize aviation and get more people into it. -

September 1, 1927 the first air mail route was created. The route was from NYC to Paris. This was extremely important because countries could communicate with each other better now. -
1932 Amelia Earhart was the first woman to fly over the Atlantic Ocean.
In 1932 Amelia Earhart was the first female aviator to fly solo across the Atlantic Ocean. -
1933 the Boeing 247 was created
The Boeing 247 was very advanced and it had brand new technology in it. This plane revolutionized aviation and set a new expectation for planes. -
The Luftwaffe was formed
In 1935 the Luftwaffe/Germany's air force was formed. They made commercial airplanes in different countries then brought them to Germany in disguise and they were turned into warplanes for the Luftwaffe. -
In 1935 Boeing beat all their competition with their Boeing 299
July 28, 1935 the Boeing 299/B-17 Flying Fortress was created. This plane outclassed their competition planes this plane was better in every aspect it was faster it could hold more weight and it had longer endurance. -

In 1936 the French air force was born. This was extremely important for them maintaining air power during WW2. -
CAA act was signed
The Civil Aeronautics Act was signed by President Roosevelt in 1938. This act allowed civilian pilot training for the World War II -

Doolittle Raid
April 18, 1942 United States Doolittle Raiders performed the biggest air raid in history. Sixteen B-25B bombers were launched from the USS Hornet without fighter escort and they went to Tokyo, Japan to bomb their city. -
