Average Physical Development Milestones

  • 7-9 Months

    Physical Growth: Slow, steady weight gain. Motor Skills: Sits without support from mom and dad and starts crawling. Coordination: Transfers objects from hand to hand, grasp is becoming better
  • 4-6 Months

    Physical Growth: Baby doubles original birth weight by around this time. Motor Skills: Rolls over from stomach to back to stomach. Coordination: Beginning to grab toys, bring hands to mouth, and reach for objects.
  • 0-3 Months

    Physical Growth: Gaining 150-200g per week. By the third month, baby should have gained about 600-800g per month. Motor Skills: Lifting head when put on stomach, also starts to push up on their arms. Coordination: Follows moving objects with their eyes, recognizes familiar objects and people from a distance.
  • 1-2 Years

    Physical Growth: Grows about 4-5 inches Motor Skills: Can walk by theirselves, beginning to learn how to run, climbs stairs with help from mom and dad Coordination: Uses both hands and may be able to build towers of blocks
  • 2-3 Years

    Physical Growth: Grows 2-3 inches a year Motor Skills: Can run fully and climb furniture Coordination: Turn pages and hold writing tools to draw
  • 4-5 Years

    Physical Growth: Still growing but much not as much as before Motor Skills: Skips and climbs well compared to before Coordination: Can begin writing letters properly
  • 5-6 Years

    Physical Growth: Grows about 2-3 inches during this period Motor Skills: Can learn how to ride a bike Coordination: Can tie shoelaces and draw much better than before
  • 8-10 Years

    Physical Growth: Steady growth continues. Some children may go through early puberty, especially girls. Motor Skills: Better sports skills to join a team. Coordination: Able to play musical instruments better
  • 10-12 Months

    Motor Skills: Stands with support from mom and dad. May take a few steps, learning how to walk. Coordination: Can point to objects and grasp is getting better day by day
  • 6-8 Years

    Physical Growth: Growing 2-3 inches of height each year Motor Skills: Can play sports Coordination: Can use writing tools and scissors much better now
