    (1804-1867) The Austrian Empire was made up of current-day Austria, Hungary, Slovenia, Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Serbia, Romania, Ukraine, Slovakia, the Czech Republic, and Poland. It was an European major power during the 19th century made up of many ethnic groups but the controlling group was the Austrians. Also, the Austrian Empire along with many other countries during their time practiced a type of forced labor called Serfdom,

    Revolutions around Europe
    During this time many revolutions and uprisings started in Europe to combat overpowered or unfair governments, and in The Austrian Empire, many protests started because the people who weren't Austrian in this empire were treated far worse. The ethnic groups in Europe also were angry that the Austrian empire was still practicing serfdom, many counties stopped allowing serfdom during this time and the Austrian Empire was not one of them.

    Prussia wanted to unify Germany, however, The Austrian Empire did not want to lose its power, so in an effort to take control, the Prussian Empire tried to push the Austrian Empire out of Germany. During this war, the Austrian Empire would often send over many of the other ethnic groups in their empire to fight, such as the Hungarians. This war was a major issue for the Austrian Empire because not only were they losing the war but it also made the groups that made up the Austrian Empire Angry

    This compromise established a dual monarchy in The Austrian empire, this mean that Austria and Hungary both had equal parts in the empire. Both the Austrians and the Hungarians could pursue their own interests as separate nations but both accepted the same emperor.

    (1867-1918) Now allowing Hungary to have more say, and giving them their own government, revolutions in Austro-Hungary declined and they were able to put more money into thier economy rather than thier military, they then started to succeed as an empire, they had the 4th fastest-growing economy, they become the 4th largest producer and exporter of machinery and the 3rd largest producer of electrical equipment. Austro-Hungary had started to become a major power in Europe.

    Bosnian Crisis
    in 1908, The Turkish people staged a revolt in the Ottoman Empire, and Austro-Hungary decided to annex the Ottoman region of Bosnia and Herzegovina. So, backed by Russia, Serbia demanded a portion of Austria's newly gained territories. The Austro-Hungarians and their close ally Germany then threatened Serbia that if they did not back down from their demands they would invade Serbia. Russia and Serbia, who were certain to lose an invasion like that, backed down. This event caused bitterness.

    The Assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand
    Archduke Franz Ferdinand was the Nephew of the Austro-Hungary emperor Franz Josef and heir to the throne. He was considered to be a threat to the Serbian efforts to unite Bosnia and Serbia. As a result, Franz Ferdinand was assassinated on a trip to Bosnia-Herzegovina by a nationalist Bosnian Serb. This event raised tensions between Austro-Hungary and Serbia and is considered to be a factor in the start of WW1.
