Many people came out to Australia including Chinese, British, Germans and Americans. The Chinese faced discrimination and humiliation. -
Federation
The Immigration Restriction Act (White Australia Policy) meant no migrants or mixed race people were allowed into Australia. those who tried to immigrate were made to take a dictation test. -
The Great Depression
During the Great Depression, Australia stopped accepting any immigrants. -
Jewish Refugees
This was the first time Australia had accepted any refugees. Because of the Holocaust, many Jews were seeking asylum and around 5000 settled in Australia in 1938. -
Populate or Perish
After World War II ended, Australian attitudes changed. They were scared of invasion and felt vulnerable - they had a fear of foreigners, or xenophobia. Politician Artur Calwell coined the idea of 'populate or perish' - without migrants, Australia would fail. -
Ten Pound Poms
British migrants, known as Ten Pound Poms, were first preference of immigrants into Australia. They were offered special treatment and guaranteed a move to Australia for 10 pounds. Over 1 million took this opportunity between 1953-1972. -
9/11
The September 11 attack on the Twin Towers affected immigration throughout the world, including Australia. Because of the Pacific Solution, asylum seekers were sent to detention centres upon arrival in Australia. People who tried to flee to Austrralia found it difficult.
