Australian Migration

  • Germany

    Germany
German immigrants played an important role in the early European settlement of Australia. One of the main reasons for early German immigration was religious mistreatment at home. Lots of the early German settlers were farmers or tradespeople such as blacksmiths or carpenters.
  • China

    China
In 1840, a few thousand Chinese workers arrived in Australia to mine for resources. By the 1850s there was more gold found which meant more Chinese people wanted to come to Australia. After the gold rushes, numerous of the Chinese people who stayed in Australia became farmers.
  • Cameleers

    Cameleers
In the mid-1800s, with journeys to central Australia at their peak, explorers and settlers found that horses and wagons were no longer an acceptable form of transportation. As a solution, camels were introduced for crossing the dry, scorching land. The first Cameleers came to Australia in 1860.
  • Japan

    Japan
Tiny numbers of Japanese began to immigrate to Australia in the late 1800s. They were attracted by the successful pearling manufacture of the North. With the introduction of diving suits in the 1880s, pearling business recruited expert Japanese divers.
