    In 1840 a few thousand Chinese workers came to Australia to mine for resources . Chinese immigration rapidly increased because of the gold discoveries in 1850. By 1861 more than 38,000 lived in Australia.

    In the mid-1800s , with expeditions to inland at their peak. Explorers and settlers found that horses and wagons were no longer suitable for transportation. The Cameleers traveled from Darwin and Adelaide with camels because they could survive in the heat and could survive without water.
