    Chinese miners

A few thousand Chinese arrived as indentured workers. They were brought to bolster the labour force as lots of convict workers weren't working that hard. Chinese immigration increased rapidly after the numerous gold discoveries of the 1850s. The Chinese workers were very skilled and diligent, but their presence created racial prejudice. As anti-Chinese riots broke out, colonial governments made laws to restrict Chinese immigration. Soon, most of the Chinese immigrants returned to China.

The cameleers played an important role in the construction of the Overland telegraph, a line that connects Darwin to Adelaide.
