125 million years ago
Australia was still connected to Antarctica. South America, Africa, Australia and Antarctica made up what was called Gondwana. Almost all of the centre of Australia was covered by sea that separated the country into 4 landmasses. -

85 million years ago
The sea level dropped, exposing more land. Australia slowly moved northwards, but still remained connected to Antarctica at the South Tasman Rise, a small area of land near Tasmania. -

65 million years ago
Australia began to separate from Gondwana. This was the Cretaceous period and about the time dinosaurs were becoming extinct. Australia’s landforms and climates changed as it moved northwards on the Indo-Australian tectonic plate. -

40 million to present day
The South Tasmanian Rise separated Tasmania from mainland Australia and Australia became an island continent.
