    The first ever Europeans to settle there were the Dutch(Netherlands) in 1606. They were going to explore Australia, but later were attacked by the Aborigines, and then they abandoned further exploration.

    In the year 1770, a man named James Hook, who became the first Englishman to reach Australia, founded the fertile east coast of Australia. He named it New South Wales and claimed it for Great Britain.

    British ships were sent out in 1787 with convicts to establish a prison colony.
  • 1830s

    1830s
    The remaining of the Aboriginal tribes in the area were relocated onto the reserves. Not only were they removed from their area, they weren't allowed to teach their children their culture.

    From 1833, til 1850's, Australia was the place for convicted British and Irish criminals. Port Author had the most strictest security measures of the British penal system and the place was well guarded. The prison was so harsh that some prisoners decided to commit murder, so they would punished, and their punish was death.

    In 1861, the government officials made boundaries for the colonies that are still in place today. The 7 major coastal settlements in Australia became independent colonies.

    The commonwealth of Australia was formed when the British Parliament passed the Constitution of Australia. It made the country and its colonies independent.

    Melbourne served as the national capital until
    Canberra was completed in 1927.

    The Aboriginal's Demand.
    A legislation was passed by the federal government to help the native Aborigines. Many of the Australians living there wanted the government to take actions to improve the life of an Aborigine. Later in the year, the Aboriginal farmers demanded equal wages for they were the ones who were native to this country and owned it.

    During this time, many people wanted Australia to be independent, however 55% of the voters disliked the idea of becoming independent.
